Quick answer

Install Superpower ChatGPT, enable folders in the extension settings, create a folder from the folders panel, then move related conversations into that folder or subfolders.

01

Open the Superpower folders panel

In ChatGPT, open the Superpower folders panel from the side controls. You will see default sections such as All conversations, Favorites, and Archived, plus your custom folders.

02

Create a folder for one real workspace

Use a folder name that matches how you work, such as Research, Client work, Writing drafts, School, or Product ideas. Open the folder menu to set a color or add a custom image so important workspaces are easier to spot.

Set color
Set image

Add a folder image for visual workspaces like brands, clients, or projects.

03

Move related chats into the folder

Drag conversations into the folder or use the conversation menu when you want to move one chat. Keep active work in top-level folders and older context in subfolders.

04

Add subfolders when a folder gets busy

For larger projects, create subfolders like Drafts, References, Decisions, Archive, or Ideas. This keeps one big folder from turning into another long list.

05

Turn on folder sidebar options

By default, Superpower folders open from a drawer on the right side of ChatGPT. If you prefer folders in the left ChatGPT sidebar, enable Show Folders in Left Sidebar. You can also keep or hide the right-edge folder button, and turn on Auto Folder Custom GPTs to automatically group new custom GPT conversations.

Auto Folder Custom GPTs New

Automatically create folders for custom GPTs and save new conversations in them.

Show Folders in Left Sidebar

Move folders from the right drawer into the ChatGPT sidebar.

Show Sidebar Folder Button

Show the right-edge button that opens and closes the folder drawer.

Folder strategy

Keep the system simple enough to maintain.

Start with 5 to 8 folders. Too many folders makes organization feel like another chore.
Use subfolders for stages of work, not every tiny topic.
Keep default folders unchanged: All conversations, Favorites, and Archived are system-level anchors.
Use color only for fast scanning. The folder name should still make sense without the color.

FAQ

Questions about organizing ChatGPT conversations.

Short answers before you start reorganizing your ChatGPT history.

Can ChatGPT organize conversations into folders by default?

ChatGPT has limited native organization. Superpower ChatGPT adds folders, subfolders, colors, folder controls, and conversation management directly inside ChatGPT.

Can I create subfolders for ChatGPT conversations?

Yes. Superpower supports nested folders so you can separate active work, references, drafts, and archived context inside one workspace.

Should I organize every old ChatGPT conversation?

No. Start with current projects first. Once your active work is clean, move older useful conversations into folders over time.

Organize ChatGPT without rebuilding your workflow.

Install Superpower, create a few folders, and keep useful conversations attached to the work they belong to.
